Processing aluminium profiles

1. What kind of safety precautions have to be taken into account when cutting and milling aluminium profiles?

Cutting and milling metal makes far more noise than cutting wood. Therefore, you should always wear proper hearing protection when cutting and milling aluminium profiles. Always cover your eyes with safety goggles to protect them from flying aluminium swarf.

2. Which tools are best for the processing of aluminium profiles?

In general, you can process aluminium profiles with the same machines that you are using for wood processing. Nevertheless, you should use special saw blades/drill bits for the processing of metal. For cutting aluminium profiles, the Ostermann experts recommend a mitre or circular saw with a carbide-tipped saw blade (trapezoidal flat tooth).Processing aluminium profiles

3. Do you need a cooling agent when sawing/drilling the profiles?

No cooling agent is required. The Ostermann experts recommend the use of a drilling and cutting oil spray, though. This will help to extend the service life of the tools. Spray the oil onto the workpiece or onto the tool.

4. What should be taken into account when drilling aluminium profiles?

Drilling or milling has to be executed with little pressure and the rotational speed should be as low as possible. As with sawing, the service time can be extended by applying a drill and cutting oil spray onto the workpiece or the tool. If too much pressure is executed or the feedspeed is too fast, stress whitening may occur in the aluminium.

5. How do you remove small scratches and soiling from anodised aluminium profiles?

To remove smaller scratches or stubborn stains, the Ostermann experts recommend the Schleiffix SFK 655 universal cleaner. The handblock cleans, polishes and leaves a matt finish on a wide range of materials, such as aluminium, wood, painted surfaces, plastics, rubber and paper. It is available in two grain sizes (P 120 and P 240).
