Formaldehyde is currently widely discussed, since new legal limits to the allowed content in wood-based materials were set. The substance was already classified as carcinogenic by the EU in 2014. It is contained in many different products. For health reasons, the concentration of formaldehyde in indoor air must be kept as low as possible.
However, the subject of "formaldehyde emissions from adhesives" plays a rather limited role in finished pieces of furniture, where the adhesive has already set. Formaldehyde emissions are mainly relevant during processing of non-hardened PVAc dispersion glue, where improper application can lead to allergies or irritations of the skin, respiratory tract or eyes.
